I think a lot of my admiration for the Di2 system has to do with the terrain I ride, lots of short, very steep hills (drumlins?) where I’m constantly dumping or adding a lot of cogs. I -LOVE- the Di2’s ability to both add and dump cogs in an instant -and- under torque without complaining, something my standard XTR will moan and yelp about. I think if I rode flatter terrain or terrain where the hills announced themselves, the Di2 would be less relevant.
Not certain why folks worry about the batteries; I’ve had my Di2 bike 6 years, and I still only charge it twice a season. The batteries have been a complete non-issue.

To be fair I don’t know a ton about them, but I really can’t see electronic shifters offering any advantages I’m interested in. I still prefer cable brakes to hydraulics. Hell, I’d have gone with RIM brakes on my most recent commuter if I could’ve found a quality new bike that had them.

Hey Sam, whaddya say we add drama to a mountain bike??

Frankly, I’m with you since reliability is job one. Not to mention the absurd cost. I’d rather bury the cash in a custom frame.

Lots of wood bridges, elevation and some exposure. Some of the exposure can be narrow but doable. Parking is available at the beginning in Walnut Creek Park in Lancaster, SC. It’s about 2.5 miles to Walnut Creek Bridge in Walnut Creek Subdivision (crosses over Twelve Mile Creek). The trail continues on across the bridge and gets steep, narrow and some exposure. Definitely in the upper intermediate category but worth the one mile ride to the end where there is a suspension bridge that is in both North & South Carolina. You can actually stand on the bridge and be in both states at the same time! It is surrounded by communities but there are plenty interesting features and wildlife to compensate. The suspension bridge is a highlight. This trail is multi use & two way so be alert to hikers and other trail users.

Have carried it on just about every ride since and used it several times… on other people’s bikes. Now I may not be typical; most probably ride more aggressively than I do. But check your gear before you go!
Anyway, why the emphasis on the 8 for tightening pedals. Aren’t they made to be self tightening. I sometimes loosen mine just so they aren’t jammed tight when I do need to get them off. I’d really rather lose that and the flat blade screwdriver (what does it fit?!) for other size torxs and a chain breaker. As far as a blade I prefer something stand alone for that. But what I’d really like is a pick your adventure custom tool! Pick your parts, they get sent along with an appropriate chassis and you put it together (if anyone is listening).
Nice round up tho, thanks.

Indeed…even four or five bikes targeted in Moab, which usually seems to be isolated from crime and problems consistent with more populated towns is surprising though. I’ll leave my bike unlocked on camping trips, but this shows that’s a bad idea.

But to echo sunspot, I would never ever leave my nice bike out in the open with a cable lock. Hell, I wouldn’t even leave it out with a chain. Maybe I’m paranoid, but these bikes are really freaking valuable. Kashima is easy to recognize as valuable, ya know.

From an environmental angle……. if the dust blows away, the trail hardens and, hopefully, becomes stable. As noted, this can be helped with various types of armor. Maintaining the trail aggressively — and staying off the rest, is part of our existential covenant.

From a management perspective…….Summer is hot and often dry. Trying to come up with guidelines (and regulations) to decide when to close a trail for dryness sounds like a major nightmare.

Maybe we just have to accept that many popular trails will have to be hardened if they are going to stay rideable………….?

But thats why riders pay their dues to IMBA and suchlike “advocacy” groups…..to level the playing field.
If IMBA don’t know what the BLM are up to, and can’t provide leadership in the next struggle, something is screwy……….and we’re in deep shit!

It depends.. The number one factor is the terrain, i.e. where you are riding. I know boring, but it is a simple truth. If your bike can rip it and you are in relative control, bingo, there you go. Now, having said that I would say I want the lightest bike that can handle said terrain and maximize fun, and safety to a lesser degree. This is why we all need more than one bike after all 🙂

So is riding wet trails in many areas. Alabama, where I live, is ranked 4th wettest State in the US with 56 inches per year behind Mississippi, Louisiana, and Hawaii at #1 with 63.7 inches per year.

I do work trails “officially” during work days and “unofficially” during my rides often. Oak Mountain State Park where I primarily ride allows riding in the evening on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Sometimes those days, both those days in the same week, get rain. Historically Birmingham has on average 117 days of rain per year. That nearly once every three days for you math geniuses.

There are some trails that we must avoid on those days because it will be a muddy mess and destroy those trails. Others, however, have different surface types and drain much better so we do ride those.

If there is a clear definition, I could not figure it out in the time available to a normal person with a full time job. I think that is why these agencies do it this way. The general public is invited to comment, but it is impossible to knowingly comment on any of it. When the rule changes they can say “we sought input from the public”… They can say it does not change the laws, but when the law says an agency can make rules, it is effectively a law.

Definitely hard to beat the Crankbrothers tool for the price. I’ve always had one in a pack somewhere since I’ve started riding. Good point on having a knife blade too. If you want non-bike tools for out in the backcountry, riders will end up having to carry a bike tool and multi-tool. Makes sense for someone to integrate them.

The soils drain/dry fast, so you can ride the day after a good rain. One of the trails has had some sandy pockets in the past. This year we are in a drought and those sandy pockets have expanded a lot. It has almost gotten so bad that you can’t ride. It seems like not riding on them would help prevent the erosion and expansion.

It’s fine, but as noted, minimal, so I also have to carry a Gerber Dime and a spoke wrench. Maybe I should upgrade. The Dime isn’t a bike tool but its pliers and knife come in handy surprisingly often.

The philips head screwdrivers are probably included mostly for adjusting hi/lo stop on the front derailleur. Obviously not an issue if you only ever ride 1x bikes, but it’s something I’ve needed it for, particularly when I’ve broken my front shifter cable.

The title. The meat of the article is good, but the title has more than a hint of protectionism in it. So much of that article is about dry conditions, but the title re-inforces the myth that riding in the rain is off limits.

People hear this myth, than spread it. Man riding wet can be so good for skills and for fun.

I’ll retract my inaccurate description, because I do think you note there is soil dependency at play…but I wish the slant was “obey trail builders’ desires” rather than riding wet trails is bad.

I’ve ridden mountain bikes from 24lbs up to 33lbs and have not noticed any consistency in the notion that a lighter bike is better than a heavier bike.

My two current bikes, a hardtail (2022 Roscoe) and a full-sus (2015 5010 carbon), both weigh about 29lbs, but I prefer the hardtail because it feels lighter when I ride it. There are a lot of differences between these two bikes beyond the suspension, but it all adds up to the hardtail being more fun.

You see it on the front of dh race bikes on super steep tracks where braking is all that really matters. It’s also pretty slow rolling, so overkill on most trail bikes for regular use. I wouldn’t run on anything with less than 150mm of travel. Swapping to something faster I have found will make a bike come alive on climbs and flatter sections. I also wish it had more transition knobs to get better grip when the bike is only partway leaned over or on slightly off camber sections. In 10 years we’ve learned a lot about building tires, and I’m glad there are now more better options that balance traction and speed. 10 years ago, dhf and dhr were revolutionary, but compared to what exists now they are starting to show their age.

I think its how the question is phrased. I mean ideally lighter is always better, we only go heavier because we want strong, reliable components and they are worth the weight tradeoff. But ideally, we’d have those frames and components we like for shredding and the weight of a road climbers bike.

That being said, I have gotten to ride some pretty serious trails (Steamboat, Crested Butte, Snowmass, Pisgah) and honestly even against such lofty comparison, Virginia Key holds its own surprisingly well. The trails are immaculately designed and maintained. The views are pretty incredible. Drainage is impressively effective. While there are, of course, no sustained climbs or descents, there are plenty of short, punchy elevation changes. The only knock on these trails is the relative abundance of bluetooth speakers blasting reggaeton.

Most riders do not put any time into working on trails. They just expect someone else to do it. If you’re in this category think about volunteering time to work a trail somewhere. You will feel a sense of accomplishment when your sweat goes into digging dirt. COTA in central Oregon is a fantastic group of dedicated trail folks. Join them!

Down here on the Mendocino Coast, we see trails lasting into the early fall months without a problem. More moisture for sure. Fortunately, we are an area where trail maintenance is a regular occurrence (once a month+). Mendocino Coast Cyclist is a great group as well.

If you think I qualify as a “former racer” then you don’t have a clue who I am 😂

Comment on Riding Wet Trails is Bad. Is Riding Extremely Dry Trails Bad Too? by JCHILLTOPPERS https://www.singletracks.com/mtb-trails/riding-wet-trails-is-bad-is-riding-extremely-dry-trails-bad-too/#comment-304692 Mon, 26 Jun 2023 14:45:04 +0000 https://www.singletracks.com/?p=647523#comment-304692 Man I don’t know. There is a lot of not … accurate about this. It all depends on the soil and trail build.

I’ve ridden in Rotorua 8 days straight in the rain with the biggest trail builders in that area…same with places in the Mid-Atlantic.

It’s irresponsible to ride any trail in any condition if it’s damaging the trail. That’s the story/headline.

Riding trails in the west can be a blast. Have fun doing it if the trails are holding and you are not creating ruts that will stay in form when they dry.

Real dry…enh…come on.

Also the MTB industry seems so preoccupied with what they could do but not with whether they should. Do MTBs need to be able to ride over everything?

I know the industry has “advance” and/or “innovate” but it seems silly to have to throw out old things. I subscribe to Old Shovel in giving old things new life.

I would imagine that for every 1 mountain biker who is obsessed with going as fast as possible all the time, there are at least 20 mountain bikers for whom the benefits of a system like the Pinion gearbox would be more important.

Ditto,
Inland Empire is a mix of folks but a large contingent is more conservative leaning so his views reflect that and may better suit TN.

I’m glad to hear that Markham Park has trails too. That was one of my other favorite places to ride back in the day. Mostly horse trails and jeep roads back then, though.

I think those old trails were made by dirt bikes (motorcycles). Lotsa fun! It might not have been legal but nobody ever ran me off. I’m glad to see some real MTB trails there now.

Huge appreciation to Frenchie and the other volunteers.

There are actually bike rentals on site, but they’re pretty entry-level.

Highly recommend if you’re in the area, and Markham Park on the NW side of the city is excellent too.

Floutek (blue) is smooth flow with great berms, Kozi (blue) gives also great flow but has some rocks and rock gardens in Modrinovy (red) offer challenge and are also fun.
See my ride on Kozi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Zue9ouJBng
